Locuming in Australia
Radiographers who have obtained their qualification in Australia will require APHRA registration and Radiation Use licence for each state you choose to work in. Best to plan ahead and preferably carry 2 to 3 licenses annually. For most locum positions our consultants can negotiate for you good packages which include some or all of the following: travel reimbursement for flights or petrol costs per kilometre, accommodation provided, car hire if required, freight relocation if required and above award rates and penalty loading for weekend and on-call work.
Air Membership
It is a requirement for AHPRA Registration that “all registered medical radiation practitioners practicing
in Australia are required to have in place appropriate professional indemnity insurance arrangements that are continuous throughout the period of registration. The registrant must ensure that the cover is appropriate to the level of risk and is inclusive of run-off cover.” The AIR offers Professional Indemnity Insurance as a direct benefit of membership. Please visit the AIR website for information on applying for membership of the AIR.
Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
Registration with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of AHPRA is required. Their professional capabilities statement for medical radiation practice identifies the minimum knowledge, skills and professional attributes necessary for safe, independent practice in diagnostic radiography, nuclear medicine technology and radiation therapy. Please click here to download the application form.

Second notarised copies of your qualifications (in English), approved English language test results, as well as a Registration Certificate or Statement of Good Standing from your national regulatory or professional body will be required.

Radiation Use License
Each state in Australia issues a ‘Radiation Use’ license. Different authorities in each of the states administer this process. All will require your AHPRA registration number. As this is a national register, they can check it online. Evidence of accreditation and qualifications may be required, but is unlikely if you’re registered with AHPRA. The AIR provides contact information for each board.
Working with Children
Being granted a WWC Check  allows you to engage in child-related work.

Working With Children Checks help ensure child-safe working environments in Australia. Pre-employment screening of adults and Volunteers who come in contact with children is mandatory and legislated across most states and territories in Australia. However there is no national framework setting out the requirements for obtaining a Working With Children Check and each state and territory has their own procedures and requirements.

All applicants should contact their WWCC in the relevant State or Territory where they are seeking employment.

Occupational Health Checks
Each State will have it’s own requirements. Most commonly, you will need to provide evidence of immunity to: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox (varicella), whopping cough (petussis) and TB (tuberculosis). All vaccinations must be up-to-date. A blood test will also be required to prove that you have antibodies (and hence immunity), against these conditions.
Working for Public Hospitals
Although not a direct employee of the hospital when locuming you are still required to abide by their HR compliancy regulations before commencing your role. Therefore beyond the above requirements you will also need to have 2 current references (no longer than 1 year old) as often these are checked and cross-referenced directly by the acting manager/s. It is best to preempt these requirements as 50% of the work is handed out by the public system. Archangels Care assists you in gaining immediate employment by holding all your compliancy on file and in check when registering through our agency.
